So much data comes to us in .pdf form or, worse, on paper that we then need to scan. We'll offer tips, tricks and best practices to quickly crack open those dastardly files and get the data in a usable format. We'll look at some of classic methods of breaking down PDFs and we'll introduce a tool that uses XML to splice PDFs and turn them into CSVs.
Charles Duncan is the founding editor of Raleigh Public Record, a non-profit online newspaper with a mission of public service journalism for Raleigh. He also has a day job with the Courthouse News Service and is a grad student at Duke University. @duncanpardo
Jim Miller covers the state Capitol for The Press-Enterprise, a newspaper based in Riverside, Calif. He has been a newspaper reporter since 1992 and has spent the past dozen years writing about state government and politics. A 2000 boot camp got him interested in computer-assisted reporting and he later earned an associate's degree in GIS. He is a graduate of the University of California, Davis. @jimmiller2
