Global Investigations Editor

The Associated Press seeks a global investigations editor based in its Washington, D.C., bureau who would work with reporters both abroad and in Washington to develop in-depth and investigative projects on topics that bridge those worlds, breaking news and explaining the world we live in.

The editor must be comfortable tackling a range of domestic and international subject matters and be able to conceptualize, drive reporting on and edit and polish pieces on complex and often sensitive subjects. The editor must be comfortable overseeing projects involving high-end data analysis and sensitive anonymous sources.

The position requires a person with deep reporting, editing and conceptualization skills and proven ability to work effectively with reporters, in person and remotely. The position further requires an ability to work across lines of authority, working with a core group of reporters but bringing in other reporters at times for various projects. The person occupying this position must be flexible and able to communicate effectively and in goal-oriented ways with colleagues, peers and other staff both abroad and in Washington.

The person occupying the position would also occasionally be an active reporter him/herself, in addition to driving reporting projects. The person should be comfortable in a player/coach editor role.

The position will work with AP's photo, multimedia, video and audio staffs to provide cross-format coverage of stories.

The position answers jointly to the Washington bureau chief, and to the senior managing editor for international news based in New York.

Qualifications:

  • Five-plus  years of reporting experience, with demonstrated excellent journalism skills

  • Prior experience on in-depth or investigative projects, either as editor or reporter or both

  • Experience managing journalists or running a team as a player-coach

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to work in a matrix organization, across lines of authority and focusing on results

  • Solid organizational skills and self-motivated, with high ethical standards and strong commitment to work

  • Ability to effectively communicate with various stakeholders, internally and externally

  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English is required.  Authorization to work in the U.S. is mandatory
