Data mining and visualization reporter

This new role is for a savvy journalist whose expertise lies in data mining and visualization. This person will know how to mine data, and make data come alive visually on the web, ipad and other digital platforms through maps, interactive graphics, layered templates, etc . He or she will be familiar with the many apps and tools at his/her disposal to enhance data visualization, and help teach this skill to others with the appropriate skills. He or she will work in partnership with local news, enterprise and business teams, and the department of news presentation with a first priority for investigative journalism.

Qualifications: Leadership and teamwork skills are a must. This journalist will be working daily with different teams in different corners, from the coding experts in web development, to the visual designers to the reporters neck-deep in the reporting of the data. This person will lead projects and people to successful results. We are open to specific skill set depending on the quality of the applicant. This person should know what good data visualization looks like and have an understanding of how a newsroom can powerfully and quickly turn raw reporting data into data visualization for the reader. Along these lines, a strong candidate would have knowledge of a broad swath of the common commercial and open source data visualization tools, and knowledge or appreciation for user interface best practices. We are looking for a journalist who speaks multiple languages, or at least can understand them. They must know the language of data. He or she should be able to speak some design, and possess at least an understanding of web development building blocks like HTML, CSS, JavaScript.

Hours:8-5, M-F, occasional nights and weekends

Pay structure: Top minimum with at least five years experience as a journalist is $67,795
