WSMV-Nashville's I-Team used half a dozen databases to "find out how often Tennessee truckers fall asleep at the wheel and kill or injure someone, and what happens when they do." WMSV found state and local data more helpful than federal: "...start at your local roadside inspection stations, where most over-hours tickets are written." Includes sidebar with websites. Roads and rails: NICAR has transportation data for journalists
The IRE and NICAR Database Library maintains several recently update U.S. Department of Transportation databases relevant to the safety of U.S. roadways and the trucking industry. The Transportation Department's truck census features records on commercial interstate vehicles. A truck accidents database includes information on buses, semitrailers, moving trucks and rental trucks. The Fatality Analysis Reporting System database contains details about fatal accidents.

Databases highlight tired truckers
Kansas City Star reporters Greg Reeves and Judy Thomas did a three day series on the effect driver fatigue played in truck accidents. In order to do the story, they had to aquire and analyze multiple federal databases. While analyzing the data, they came across numerous pitfalls that had to be crossed. The work was done with Foxpro.
