Summary "MTBE is shorthand for a chemical called methyl tertiary butyl ether. It's a gasoline additive that is contaminating drinking water from Maine to California It is classified as a 'possible human carcinogen' and, at extremely low levels, it makes water tastes and smell like turpentine. Some experts say MTBE may be one of the biggest environmental crises of the next decade."
