  • Pothole Patrol

WDIV-TV investigates why Detroit motorists were spending so much time in construction traffic, especially when many of the places motorists were backed up in were just repaved only months earlier. The investigation finds that crews were told by the governor's office to pave as much as they could with the smallest amount of asphalt. This resulted in simply "painting" the roads to please drivers temporarily.

This two part investigation examined two cases: an obscure police abuse case in Nashville and a highly publicized one in Milwaukee. In both cases, the police chiefs believed the officers were not only unfit for duty, but also that they posed a danger to the public. Our report showed how civil service commissions which were intended to protect civil servants from politics, also protect bad cops. (June 28, 1996)

  • The Injury Industry

WSMV discovered a secretive industry of telemarketers, private investigators, runners and chiropractors who all benefited by contacting people who had been in automobile accidents and getting them to come in for a "free exam." The investigation found the only people solicited were people who had been hit by drivers with insurance. WSMV documented how one company portrayed itself to accident victims as a "service organization" whose purpose was to "help accident victims" yet in reality they were a for-profit company earning a bounty for each patient who kept his chiropractic appointment. The practice of soliciting accident victims is against the law, yet Tennessee had never disciplined a single chiropractor for soliciting.

Reginald Muldrew is considered by many in American law enforcement to be the most violent and prolific rapist in American history. He is connected to some three rapes in southern California. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison of the rapes of four women. After serving only 16 years of his sentence, Muldrew was released from prison in 1995 because of changes in sentencing guidelines. Muldrew was considered a sexual predator who had failed all psychiatric tests by officials. Shortly after being released, Muldrew was able to vanish from the watch of police. KCBS investigates and finds that Muldrew was living right under the eyes of law enforcement. He is once again being tried for two alleged crimes - including sexual assault. (April 29, May 17, 1996)

King World Productions shows that supermarket stores may knowingly be selling food which is seriously beyond its "sell by" date. Packages of dairy products, cereal, poultry, meat, and even baby food (some products as old as five years out of date) were purchased from store shelves. These packages were then returned to store managers. In many cases these food products were returned to stor shelves, only to be puchased again. (Feb. 21, 1995)

WCNC-TV found that a county pre-trial release program was allowing people charged with serious crimes to get out of jail before their trials and without having to post bond. The program was originally designed to release only those inmates who were indigent and were facing minor charges. The story resulted in new commissioners scaling back the program, Apr. 29, June 6, and Dec. 19, 1994.
