  • Prying Eyes

After a tip from a woman who was the victim of a window peeper, KARE 11 News began surveillance of her condominium and successfully documented the peeper's appearance at her window three times in a matter of days, virtually undressing on one occasion. KARE also examines the connection between stranger rape and window peeping, helping to dispel the myth that window peeping is a harmless crime. (Nov. 17-18, 1996)

  • Rites of Passage

Though students consider hazing a fun way to initiate underclassmen at their new school, this KARE 11 News report shows that in some cases the fun can get out of hand. Students are taped to trees, while others are shown being ridiculed and covered in catsup, honey, chocolate syrup and eggs. (Nov. 7, 22, 1996)

This piece exposed the growing white-collar crime called "True Name Fraud." Without a person's knowledge, their name and social security may be stolen and their identity duplicated to steal thousands of dollars from stores, car dealers, and financial institutions. Experts believe millions of American s are victims of this fraud at a cost of three billion dollars a year. Identity can be obtained through stealing a wallet, rummaging through garbage, breaking into a locker or opening up a mailbox. Once the thieves have the social security number of an individual, a photo ID is made which enables them to obtain instant credit at stores, and open bank accounts with all correspondence sent to new addresses. It may take several months before an individual realizes they have been victimized and even years to clean up their credit record. (September 11, 1996)

Quietly, and with little or no scrutiny, hospitals throughout the country are replacing highly trained nurses with lower paid and minimally trained aides, often endangering patients in the process. In a four-part series the Post-Gazette raised troubling questions about the impact of this trend on patient safety, the quality of health care and even the cost savings meant to be obtained by such restructuring. The investigation found in most cases the personnel drawing blood, monitoring heat rates or inserting catheters had less training than over-the-road truck drivers. The story found one example after another of hospital patients injured or killed by the mistakes or negligence of aides performing tasks they were not prepared or trained to handle.
