The Prosecution of Governor Siegelman
Seven U.S. Attorneys were fired in December 2006 by the Bush Justice Department not because of poor performance, but because of the refusal to engage in politically-driven prosecutions. Former Governor of Alabama Don Siegelman was convicted of bribery and sentence to serve seven years in jail.

Unlawful/questionable spending from the Alabama governor's Contingency Fund-"Lori Siegelman billed travel costs to state, records show"
These articles, written in the Mobile (Ala.) Register, looks at suspicious expenditures by Gov. Don Siegelman, as well as his wife and staff. The governor is suspected of using the money, taken from the governor's Contingency Fund, for non-public purposes. The governor has also failed to produce the proper supporting records such as receipts for many of his expenditures, making it difficult to determine what "public purposes" he has used the money for.

Secret lottery foundation/ governor's house
The Register investigates the political and business activities of Don Siegelman, Alabama's governor. Part of the stories focus on "secret fund-raising activities by the governor through what was thought to be a dormant nonprofit foundation to support a state lottery initiative," according to the contest entry summary. The rest of the stories reveal how a longtime supporter of the governor, using his accountant as a straw man, has bought Siegelman's private residence in Montgomery, Ala., for twice its appraised value.

A Birmingham News' investigation into Governor Don Siegelman's administration discovered lucrative state contracts awarded to Siegelman's friends and supporters, including his personal stock broker. The state dealings became part of a federal and state investigation into the administration's action and evolved into a criminal investigation into Siegelman's personal finances.

Florida Scandal Figure Linked to 3 in James' Cabinet
Mobile Register investigates Fob James, governor of Alabama, and James's Cabinet's dealings with a man named Frank Daniel. Daniel was awarded lucrative state bond work through he governor's office but double-billed the state on both work and travel expenses. While many questioned the quality of Daniel's work, Daniel secured about $300,000 in donations to James before James's 1994 election, including $10,000 from Daniel himself. (May 14, 1996)
