  • The State of our Maternal Health

    In California, the health of pregnant women has been getting worse over the years and the maternal death rate is even worse that Bosnia's. The story investigated the causes behind what is making women sicker. One finding included showing that women in California are at a greater risk of having a cesarean surgery at for-profit hospitals where there is a financial incentive to perform this procedure.

  • "Dodik/RS Development Bank"

    CIN reporters investigated a Bosnia-Herzegovina SIPA report that accused Republika Sprska Prime Minister Milorad Dodik of abusing his power by awarding financial "tenders" to friends. The CIN found flaws in the initial SIPA report. Reporters also reveal Dodik's control of the Investment-Development Bank of RS and detail their questionable loan distributions.

  • Bosnia-Herzegovina Politicians' Assets

    By law, Bosnian politicians are required to disclose their assets. When the Center for Investigative Reporting in Sarajevo explored financial records of individual politicians, small unreported private fortunes were uncovered. Corporate kickbacks from special interests were found as well.

    The reporters at CIN wanted to find out why Bosnia had the lowest number of small businesses. What they found was "a government that was more impediment than partner, banks that practically ignored the needs of businesses and an environment where businesses were extorted by organized crime."

  • Power Brokers

    A transition to a competitive energy market was supposed to lower energy prices for residents of the Balkan nations. Instead, "many people across the Balkans are facing energy shortages AND higher energy bills." Much of the infrastructure remains outdated, "and some state-run energy companies have been plagued by waste and corruption." Meanwhile, private energy companies are benefiting greatly from deals with government energy companies.

  • Waiting for Justice

    After the ethnic slaughter in the Balkans, Bosnia-Herzegovina's state court was going to take over trying war criminals charged with genocide, mass rape and torture. It has not happened. Millions of euros were spent to build a War Crimes Chamber, but not a single trial has been held, and hundreds of suspects live free among the same people they are charged with terrorizing.

    "For six weeks a team of nine reporters from the Center for Investigative Reporting in Sarajevo (CIN) visited hospitals and clinics and talked with the people who work and are treated there. They found a healthcare system that is desperately sick." The reporters analyzed the various problems in the system, examined funding issues and consulted experts on possible solutions.

  • Explaining Terrorism

    The Los Angeles Times provides explanations and warnings of the terror threat to the United States published before September 11, and further explanations and insights after the attacks about the methods and nature of the terror networks behind the attacks. Major findings include: the Millennium bomb plot aroused fears of sleeping terrorism cells in the U.S.; two months before the attacks reporters documents the high level of threat from sleeper cells throughout the West; after the attack the Times identified Mohammed Atta as the leader of the plot; a major terrorist threat was exposed in Western Europe and Bosnia; tied September 11 hijackers to the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole; foretold problems for Islamic charities; detailed the warnings authorities missed prior to September 11; discovered bin Laden's extensive use of aircraft and secret U.S. fears as early as 1996 that terrorists might use crop dusters as weapons.
