  • Birmingham Mayor's Business Deals Snare Friend in Corruption Case

    Mayor Larry Langford of Birmingham held ties to raising money for charities and businesses by tapping city vendors and local governments that he served. His friend John Katapodis was later charged in his role with one of the charities.

  • Following the money? Banks vacate city's heart, grow in higher-income areas

    Federal statistics for Fairfield, California show banks have abandoned older, low-income housing neighborhoods in an apparent violation of the Community Reinvestment Act, and moved to where new upscale housing developments were going up. The banks were catering to the middle and upper classes, and ignoring low-income neighborhoods. Controversial check cashing stores that charge alarmingly high interest rates have swept into these low income neighborhoods where the banks disappeared.

  • Serving Those Who Served

    Westport sheds light on the difficult lives of homeless veterans in Fairfield and Westport. The story reveals that "there are people ... who have lost jobs and apartments because of serious alcohol and drug problems and mental illnesses brought on by the trauma of fighting in a war..." The magazine reports on experts' estimates that "that about a third of all homeless people .. are veterans of military service." The story profiles John Richard Eula, a Vietnam veteran, who became homeless because of alcohol and drug abuse habits, acquired during his military service.

  • The Candidate

    Cincinnati profiles Jon Saylor, a young politician, who has induced illegal voting and election falsification "to win a seat on the Fairfield city council." The report details the circumstances surrounding Saylor's crime and conviction. The story points out that Saylor "could have - well, did - win the election of his own," as he "had everything you'd want in a politician: intelligence, charm, dedication and the right connections." The magazine features the question: "Why would a young man sink to such depths...?" Saylor's explanation: "I let my pride make a crook out of me."

    The Daily Republic, of Fairfield, Calif., published a multi-part series about the cost and quality of health care provided by NorthBay Health Systems. It reported that "Managed care had dramatically altered the way people get health care...More and more, a person's health care is in the hands of an insurance company. And when hospitals and insurance companies battle, patients often get lost in the middle. NorthBay Health System wants to help people be healthy. How does NorthBay spend its money to achieve this goal? The quality of care patients receive often depends on the doctors they see. But some doctors are embroiled in a bitter conflict with NorthBay hospitals which may eventually force many to leave the county or go out of business...."
