FEMA: A Legacy of Waste
Hurricane Katrina is only the latest episode in a history of bungling and fraud associated with FEMA. The Sun-Sentinel spent nearly a year studying FEMA's work in Miami-Dade County and discovered fraud and waste in the aftermath of Hurricane Frances. They found at least $330 million of FEMA money poured into communities that suffered no damage, as well as FEMA inspectors with criminal records, FEMA funds used for twice as many funerals as official deaths, and many other instances of fraud and waste.

The Lawless Sea
This eight-month investigation unveiled the "tangled web of responsibility" behind the 2002 sinking of the oil tanker Prestige off the coast of Spain and France. The investigation uncovered the various international stakeholders, including a U.S.- based inspection company, that failed to stop the faulty ship from launching. Ultimately, the investigation shows that, even though it was known that the ship was not seaworthy, the secrecy and lack of accountability surrounding the shipping industry allowed it to operate.

The Battle Over the Courts: How politics, ideology, and special interests are compromising the U.S. justice system
Beginning with the Warren Supreme Court, this article "examined how various interest groups used the courts as a new means to achieve political ends. The movement began with civil rights groups in the 1950s. In recent years, other organizations, especially business and consumer groups, have joined the fray, treating judicial elections like any other political election as a means of installing judges sympathetic to a cause. The result has been a political free-for-all over the courts, a development that is eroding the judicial branch's independence and neutrality."
