  • Lost Ambulances

"Many people think GPS will lead people in the right direction, including 911 operators. One operator made a critical mistake not taking down directions and assuming the county's 911 mapping system would lead the ambulance in the right direction. What she didn't know is more than 40 RV and trailer parks did not show up in that mapping system."

  • Where Are Houston's Cops

KTRK-TV investigated just how many police are patrolling Houston's streets. They found an average of 286 officers "patrolling America's fourth largest city at any given time; less than 200 at 2:00 in the morning when crime is near its peak." They then "went several steps further plotting the department's patrol car GPS data." They "looked at normal patrol times, shift changes, crime peaks, and a few high profile crime areas." Afterwards they made it interactive and posted it on the Web.

  • 911 Test

What's unique about the 911 emergency system in Rhode Island is that it allows operators to trace a persons location using a GPS system. As this story explains, this system can be useful only if the cell phones have a GPS chip in it, which is present only in newer models.
