  • "Dr. Buzzard"

Gary Karpin billed himself to citizens of Arizona as a "divorce mediator" and former prosecutor. He was actually a disbarred lawyer from Vermont. Thousands of people flocked to his offices hoping for quick and relatively painless divorces. Over 300 eventually filed complaints against him, and the Maricopa County Attorney's office filed charges against him on 16 counts of theft and fraud.

  • Mental Health Masquerade

New Times reports that "Arizona set out to create the best mental health care system money could buy, but ended up with a program as dysfunctional as the people it serves." The Office of the Court Monitor is supposed to hold the system accountable to its clients, but nobody's been holding the office itself accountable. The investigation reveals why litigation over care for Arizona's mentally ill ended four years ago, but private attorneys have racked up more than $1 million in fees since then. The article also discusses the Arnold v. Sarn case in which the then Maricopa County public fiduciary brought the suit against the county and state on behalf of indigent seriously mentally ill.
