The All About Me Mayor
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is known for holding endless press conferences, flying around the world and campaigning for presidential candidates. The author, using a California Public Records Request, received the mayor's work schedule from may through July and found that Villaraigosa had spend only 11 percent of his time on "real, roll up your sleeves work."

According to advertisements he distributed in the media, Los Angeles Clippers basketball owner Donald T. Sterling was building a new homeless center in downtown LA. But after L.A. Weekly did some investigating, they found he wasn't close to constructing anything. In fact, he was still looking for a homeless service provider to raise the $50 million needed to build the Donald T. Sterling Homeless Center.

A River Lost?
This investigation explored the many ways in which a Seattle Superfund site, the Duwamish River, was being neglected by the government. The reporters found that plans to clean up the pollution fell short, that local governments did not follow EPA orders regarding the river, and locals who fish in the river are eating unsafe levels of contaminated fish.

"Before China was implicated in the Panama poisoning, Bogdanich began investigating the incident because of similarities to another poisoning ten years earlier in Haiti," where a Chinese company was involved." Reporters at The New York Times traced the deaths from a cough syrup back to China. In the process, they exposed a frightening lack of oversight on imported products. When the FDA learned of the Times' story, it immediately halted all imports of Chinese glycerin. And more than 30 countries recalled Chinese made toothpaste containing anti-freeze.

NewsChannel 5 Investigates: Now Hiring Sex Offenders
NewsChannel 5 investigated the hiring practices of McDonald's. The investigation uncovered dozens of child molesters and other convicted sex offenders had listed McDonald's as their employer. Several were later convicted of committing new crimes against McDonald's customers and young employees.The corporation's lack of hiring policies were found to be the cause of the problem: Background checks were only done "as needed."

Philadelphia City Councilman Indicted in federal bribery investigation
Philadelphia councilman Rick Mariano was accused of having a company in his district pay $23,455 of his credit card debt in 2002, with two of the three checks laundered by other companies in his district. He is also accused of having another company pay $5,400 of his gym dues. Federal prosecutors said Mariano, in turn, provided help with city services and agencies to businessmen who paid his bills.
