  • An Un-American Tragedy

Pat Tillman was a former college football star and NFL player who enlisted in the Army and became an Army Ranger after the events of September 11, 2001. His death in 2004 in Afghanistan was presented by the military as a heroic act, but as more details emerged, it became clear that he died not from the enemy's bullets, but rather was a victim of friendly fire. ESPN.com investigated, interviewing some of the soldiers who witnessed the chaos which led to Tillman's death, and examining whether or not the Army artificially inflated Tillman's battlefield deeds in order to present him as a hero.

  • Crackpot Crackdown

Police and the DA in Jackson County, Texas, ran a series of drug busts for minor infractions. All of the suspects were African-Americans and were intimidated into pleading guilty rather than face much harsher sentences. The entire sting operation was based on the testimony of a single confidential police informant. Civil rights lawyers are now involved in trying to remedy some of the most flagrant miscarriages of justice.

He was known for recruiting young men who looked younger than they were. And he stage-managed the filming of the Jackson "rebuttal tape," telling Debbie Rowe what to say and how to say it.

  • The Miracle Merchants

For nearly two years, Chicago Tribune reporters sponsored more than a dozen children in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In May of 1997, eight reporters set off in search of those children. Eventually, all were found-except for one girl who had been dead for most of the time she was sponsored. Although a few of the other children received periodic handouts-often ill-fitting clothing and shoes, bars of soap, cheap cooking pots-several got next-to-nothing. In no case was any child's life changed, several of the children were even unaware they had been sponsored.

This Beaver County Times story investigates Michael Jackson, Beaver County's prothonotary who had been elected to five consecutive terms, virtually unchallanged.
