  • "Court ignores NY rules on filing documents"

Public access to court documents has been hampered in some areas of New York state. Instead of submitting documents to be formally filed, lawyers passed them "directly to judges' chambers." Consequently, the files never made it to the proper place to be accessible to the public.

  • Out of Control

"The story, complete with an extensive multimedia component, focused on the impact of the bevy of sex offender laws passed by the New York State Legislature (and, to a lesser extent, Congress). In the past decade New York lawmakers, like many in other states, have constantly toughened the registration of sex offenders."

  • Tasers

WTIU-TV investigated the November 2003 death of James Borden, an inmate at the Monroe County Indiana Jail in Bloomington. Borden died during his booking. Just after his death, the jail revealed that officers had used a TASER device on him during the booking process because he was being "combative." Between his death and the air date of the story, there had been no disciplinary action taken against the officers, no charges filed in the case, and no ruling from any authority on whether or not the officers acted appropriately.

  • A price too high

In this three-part series, reporter Matt Birkbeck from the Record began looking into real estate issues in the Poconos after discovering in court documents that the foreclosure rate for Monroe County had grown from 100 in 1990 to nearly 600 in 1999. The Record found that thousands of homebuyers, many minorities from New York and New Jersey, were being convinced to buy homes at rates higher than market value. When they were unable to make payments on their homes, most were forced into foreclosure and bankruptcy.

  • Road Warriors

In Monroe County, Ill., locals don't take kindly to two wheeled traffic traveling through the county's two lane highway system; the resentment is a combination of agricultural concerns for the land as well as misconceptions surrounding the personalities of bike riders. The county enacted an ordinance stating that groups of up to 50 riders must register for a permit from the county sheriff.
