Dateline penetrated the dense network of sweatshops in the garment industry to find out what conditions are like from a sweatshop worker's perspective. The series is an unconventional report from an insider - a Dateline employee, who after several weeks of sewing lessons, went to work in garment factories in New York and Los Angeles. Bad Apples; Lessons Learned?
The two part story documents serious problems with lax teacher background checks that can lead to students being sexually molested by their teachers. Part I includes a candid interview with a pedophile teacher who was allowed to move from school to school, molesting students every step of the way. Part II reveals nearly 2,500 teachers and other school employees with criminal backgrounds working at schools in Florida, a state with one of the toughest background checks in the country. This two part investigation examined two cases: an obscure police abuse case in Nashville and a highly publicized one in Milwaukee. In both cases, the police chiefs believed the officers were not only unfit for duty, but also that they posed a danger to the public. Our report showed how civil service commissions which were intended to protect civil servants from politics, also protect bad cops. (June 28, 1996)

In some cases no background checks are done in advance of hiring, and employees without the specific authorizations to do so, are many times free to roam the airport with unlimited access to baggage areas, tarmacs, and even the aircraft themselves. WSMV found a Nashville police officer who had been collecting disability pay for 15 years working as a patrol officer in California. In fact, he was not even patrolling the streets in California, he was collecting disability there for yet another disability claim. The investigation found the Nashville officials could have cut off his benefits years ago, had they obtained documents found in the file of the Nashville police department jus a block away.
