  • CNN presents: Seeds of Terror

CNN traces the roots of Al Qaeda to Southeast Asia, based on a terrorist plot that occurred in that region in 1995, which was a blueprint for what happened on September 11, 2001. With rare footage shot in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore, hundreds of intelligence documents and access to top-level sources throughout the region, this documentary shows how Al Qaeda has grown in power and influence, spreading through the region, gathering followers and executing some of the world's most violent terrorist plots.

  • Mayaguez

CBS News investigates what happened to three American troops left behind alive on Koh Tang Island in the last battle of America's war in Southeast Asia. The mission of the Marines who fought the battle was to save the crew of the SS Mayaguez, a merchant ship seized by the Cambodians. "For decades the mission was hailed as a victory. In truth, it was a military disaster in which bad intelligence cost American lives," the segment reveals. Other findings include that the government knew the three Marines left behind were alive; that the men could have been saved for days, possibly weeks, before being captured and executed; and that their families were told that the troops died in combat.

William H. Barrett was making his second run for county sheriff. He was promoting himself as having extensive background in law enforcement and as a Vietnam combat veteran. He intimated that his service was top-secret. In the course of covering the campaign, the GT reported that the candidate had spent his service years as a Marine Corps cook at Camp LaJeune, N.C., and had never been in Southeast Asia. He had wildly inflated his work history in law enforcement. The candidate's campaign staff lied about the findings of an "expert" hired to corroborate the candidate's record and refute newspaper reports after it was called into question.
