Trapped in Tamms
The Tamms Correctional Center is touted as housing some of the worst criminals in the state. Yet state research revealed that many of the inmates were mentally ill and were left untreated. Lengthy consecutive sentences were frequently handed to prisoners who spit or threw body wastes at guards. Food and water was also withheld from inmates and punishments were often excessive.

The Riverfront Times reports on the Tamms Correctional Center, a high-tech "supermax" prison, in Tamms, Ill. Lawsuits had been filed against the Illinois Department of Corrections for the prison's treatment of inmates, " alleging that confinement at Tamms constitutes cruel and unusual punishment for the mentally ill."

Chicago Magazine examines the new super-maximum-security prison in Tamme, Illinois. It was meticulously designed to house the state's most malicious criminals, but inside its concrete cells, they are deprived of human contact and subjected to a crushing monotony, as officials count on an expensive penal hell to regain control of the system.
