Buried secrets, brutal truths
Over a seven-month period in 1967, and elite Army platoon known as Tiger Force committed the longest-documented series of atrocities by a battle unit in the Vietnam War. This story examines the allegations against the platoon, ranging from executing unarmed, elderly farmers to severing the ears of the Vietnamese dead to wear on necklaces. The Blade looked to veterans and documents to give color to this story of war crimes that went unpunished.

The Monkey Series: Shock the Monkeys; The Brain Gain; The Spy Who Loved Monkeys; Monkey in the Middle; Year of the Monkey
Willamette Week investigated a whistleblower's claims of inhumane treatment of research monkeys at the Oregon Regional Primate Research Center. Some of the stories shed light on "a controversial procedure for collecting rhesus semen samples, known as electro-ejaculation," which has later been modified. Another part of the series profiles a researcher who examines what causes depression by using primates. A third part focuses on how an undercover observer documented the use of kittens for hearing-problems and deafness research, the atrocities taking place at a fox farm, and the cruel training of elephants for circus purposes.

Keeping the Peace?
Dateline NBC reports "An investigation of atrocities committed around the world by United Nations peacekeepers against civilians they are supposed to protect. We obtained actual 'trophy photos' of torture sessions which were taken by UN soldiers themselves as souvenirs.... we also documented the systemic failures that led to these atrocities -- lax screening, training and punishment of peacekeepers by the UN."

ABC News 20/20 reports "an investigation of one of Germany's largest pharmaceutical companies Bayer and its role in human medical experimentation on concentration camp inmates during World War II. .... documented for the first time the depth and scope of Bayer's involvement in human medical experiments in concentration camps. The research protocol in (one) case involved infecting healthy children with life-threatening diseases like typhus and then using experimental Bayer vaccines to see if they could combat the disease...."
