The News exposed numerous economic blunders by members of Buffalo's economic development agency. The use of anti-poverty funds for employee health insurance perks and BlackBerry devices are just some of the misuses of city finances. The city also financed a failed restaurant that was owned by a "former pro basketball player" with the anti-poverty funds.

Absolute Convictions: My Father, a City, and the Conflict that Divided America
Reporter Eyall Press grew up with this story-- his father, Shalom Press, was a colleague of Dr. Barnett Slepian, the abortion provider who was murdered in Buffalo NY in 1988. Press used "newspaper articles, books, municipal reports, medical journals...videotapes, newslertters, journals, and court records" to document the abortion wars centered in western New York. His main sources were several hundred interviews with the participants in the conflict, including those with pro-life activists, some of whom had "spent years protesting outside my father's medical office in Buffalo, and, at times, outside the home where I grew up." Hotel Sex Offender
This investigation found nine registered sex offenders living in a downtown Buffalo hotel. Eight of them were classified as most likely to repeat their crimes. The offenders were placed in the hotel by state parole officers, but the public and hotel guests were not notified. One of the offenders worked as a hotel desk clerk. The investigation also discovered that Buffalo rarely sends out sex offender notifications.

Special Report: Best Schools
Reporters from the Buffalo News investigate how poverty level affect student test scores in nine local elementary schools. What they found was that, in most cases, schools with children from lower ecomonic backgrounds often faired better than higher income students in suburban schools. "We considered these to be the schools doing the best job educating students--rather than the schools that happened to have students from the best economic backgrounds." This investigation also looks into how financial contributions from each school district affected student academic success.

The Damage Done
This series follows the illegal purchase of 250 hand guns, their transport across state lines, and their sale on the streets of Buffalo to "doped-up teenagers, petty thieves and hard-core drug dealers." One gun runner accomplished this feat. The series also tellswhere and how the weapons are manufactured, how they are sold and some of the double-standards of the industry. The writers also tell the stories of some of the victims of shootings using the 250 handguns.
