  • The Day the Earth Caved In: An American Mining Tragedy

The book investigates an underground mine fire that has raged out of control since John F. Kennedy occupied the White House, spewing toxic gases and causing the relocation of an entire mining community. Drawing on interviews with key participants and new research, the book exposes the failures of major political and government figures, and investigates individual rights, corporate privilege and governmental indifference to the powerless.

  • Too much time, Too few answers

The Crandall Canyon min in Huntington, Utah collapsed, killing six miners and a subsequent cave-ion took the lives of three rescuers. The event was blamed on a mine bounce, when pressure from the roof causes the thick coal pillars supporting the roof to explode. Several months earlier in March a major bounce occurred 900 feet from where the collapse in August happened, and it was never reported to federal mine regulators. Mining experts wondered why the federal regulators approved the original mine plan to begin with.

  • Bitter Pills

"Medicines for cancer, cholesterol, blood pressure - even the front-line defense against bird flu - are being counterfeited by international rings." Dateline NBC examines how "loopholes in existing government regulations have allowed the fakes to reach U.S. drug stores - even major chains like CVS and Rite Aid." The investigation into this potential health risk found, among other things, a cocaine smuggler who now counterfeits Lipitor "because there was less risk and more money." Also, photos of counterfeit operations revealed some "based in caves, others using drywall, cement and highway paint among their ingredients."
