A Run on the Banks
An E Magazine investigation focuses on "how factory fishing decimated Newfoundland cod." The story follows the history of the cod fishing industry - from the colonial era, with "seemingly limitless bounty" - to the 1970s, when in the Canada territorial waters "the groundfish stocks were so depleted that many trawlers had to move elsewhere," and the 1980s, when "the stock was in free fall" and some plants had to close. The report reveals a scientific finding that, after so many years of destruction, "even if left alone, the northern cod may never recover." The author draws the conclusion that "it's not certain that Canada has learned from its mistakes with the cod," as now "the fishery has simply turned to alternative species."
