Pawlenty's Pardon
Jeremy Giefer was charged with raping his own daughter and then received a pardon for a 1993 sex-crime conviction for raping a 14-year-old -- the mother of his latest alleged victim. City Pages revealed that Giefer wanted the pardon so his wife could open a daycare center in his home. Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty chaired the board which granted the pardon.

Prison Profiting: Behind Arizona's Immigration Law
NPR's report shows that private prison corporations helped to write Arizona 1070, its controversial immigration law. The story examines "the private prison companies' handin getting the law written and passed, beginning with a private meeting at the Hyatt in washington D.C and ending with extensive campaign contributions and political connections to lawmakers and the governor of Arizona."

"Political misuse of a public database, a collection of stories by Harford Courant staff writer Jon Lender"
Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz exploited an extensive yet recondite database of "36,000 Connecticut citizens" by submitting a FOI request within her office. By using her own staff and a "taxpayer-funded budget," she tracked and documented citizen's "political and personal information" and created the database to boost her aspiration of reaching higher office.

The Perfect Pension Fund
Florida's public pension system is not as perfect as it seems. The investigation finds a pattern of misleading statements and oversight failures by the agency that manages the pension funds, State Board of Administration. It also shows that the three elected officials who oversaw the agency, including Florida's former governor, ignored personal conflicts of interest and misled the public on the poor condition of the pension fund.

DMN Investigates/Rick Perry
The Dallas Morning News investigated the background of Texas governor,Rick Perry, as he sought re-election for a third term. The reporters showed that the state had given more than $16 million taxpayer dollars to high tech companies with investors or officers who were large campaign donors to Perry.

Oregon Radio System Failures
In 2005, Oregon launched a $414 million project to build an emergency radio network that would allow public safety officers to communicate to each other in a crisis. This investigation shows that project officials had misled lawmakers and the public about the tremendous cost to the state and falsified progress reports given to the legislature and governor.

Ohio Corrections Connections
This series found “one of the largest state agencies involved in a pattern of apparent abuse of state tax dollars and power”. This series revealed a number of things, including expensive parties at the taxpayers’ expense while employees were being laid off, friends of officials buying state-made furniture for less than state agencies were paying for it, and firing workers for a number of violations and then hiring them back within weeks or months.

"The Plane Truth"
Sun-Sentinel reporters found Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and Lt. Gov. Jeff Kottkamp were using government planes for personal travel. In two years, more than half the trips taken were between the lieutenant governor's home and the capital. In two years, Kottkamp "billed taxpayers" nearly $425,000 to finance the flights.

"Minnesota's Hiring Freeze?"
Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty ordered a hiring freeze for all state agencies in 2008. An investigation by Minnesota Public Radio finds that there were over 5,000 new hires between the time of the governor's announcement and April of 2009. Compared to the number of employees who retired, that means the workforce "grew by 12 people" in a year.
