Spanish-language FOIA requests
We undertook the project to explore the issue of language access and freedom of information. Our goals were threefold. First, we wanted to break new ground in open government with regards to language access by submitting FOI requests in Spanish. Second, we wanted to receive data from officials at city, country, state and federal levels to use as the basis for stories and articles that fulfilled our watchdog and public service mission. Third, we wanted to educated our colleagues and readers about their information rights so that they could have additional tools for their news production and consumption, respectively.

Sink or Swim: Mavericks High Schools claim to help trouble students, but questions persist about their quest for profits from taxpayer money
The investigation reveals that the for-profit charter school Mavericks in Education Florida drive for profit conflicts with the company's mission of helping at-risk kids graduate from high school. Maverick's graduation rates are abysmal, former employees allege its attendance records and grades are falsified, and the schcools receive "incomplete" grades from the Florida Department of Education. Using taxpayer funds, the company is promising thousands of kinds an education that it does not deliver.

Deep Cuts: Why is the Triangle Land Conservancy Logging Its Land
The Triangle Land Conservancy is one of the most respected land protection nonprofit agencies in North Carolina. Its mission is to protect land from development and environmental degradation. But in 2004, under new leadership the TLC quietly changed its mission to include the timbering of lands. Until the story was published, most donors knew little or nothing of the timbering.

Europe's Hidden Billions
An investigation of spending by the European Unions questions whether there is proper oversight of taxpayer money. Although nearly impossible to track where EU money is spent, the Financial Times found that millions of euros are being siphoned off by organized crime syndicates. Additionally, many of the EU's programs meant to support under-developed countries no longer are serving that mission.

Killings At The Canal: The Army Tapes
War crime by American soldiers in Iraq is something that has never been seen before, until now. Four Iraqi detainees were killed and no one knew why, until the videotapes of the interrogations were found and everything was revealed. Also, the rules of the Army led the American soldiers to kill these detainees, as written in a memo.

Blackwater
Blackwater, hired by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) “to participate in a program to assassinate al Qaeda leaders.” Furthermore, Blackwater was used to “help carry out snatch and grab operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.” This series also looked at the relationship between the “CIA and several of Afghanistan’s most powerful and possibly most corrupt government officials.”

A World of Hurt
The New York State workers compensation system was criticized, but seldom examined. This series exposes the costs of the system failing it most basic mission: “to resolve jobsite injuries without further damaging workers or hurting their employers.” Often workers had to wait a number of months to have their cases heard, hearings were short, workers were fired after being injured and claimant lawyers often didn’t think of the long-term results.

Tax Travesty
Philadelphia property taxes levies were plagued with inequalities aimed at gaining favor of residents with political clout. Overall, the investigation uncovers how the mission of the Board of Revision of Taxes, which is to accurately assess property values, failed because of consistent practice of undervaluing the homes of wealthy residents.
