  • Showdown at Miramar

    The Marines wanted to move to San Diego. Residents were up in arms about the noise that Marine helicopters would cause. One resident - an engineer by trade - sued the Department of the Navy (which oversees the Marines), accusing the military of skewing data used to approve the new base. KNSD-TV investigated those claims.

  • Hush Kit: Is the DC-9 safe? Does the FAA care?

    Federal regulations require that by the year 2003, every DC-9 aircraft in the U.S. be equipped with a special device to muffle its engine's noise. Nashville Scene learns that these devices, called hush kits, may not be safe. Also uncovered is an apparent cover-up by FAA officials concerning the kit's alleged safety problems.

They're installing noise detectors so sensitive their pets set them off, and leaving town without telling anyone how to shut them down-placing unreasonable demands on already bogged-down law enforcement.     KPTV-TV (Portland) broadcasts a documentary on hearing loss among railroad employees; the companies knowingly exposed workers to dangerous levels of noise and forbade the use of ear plugs; since the story ran, railroad workers with hearing loss have been suing the company, and the industry is trying to repeal the law that makes that possible, July 19, 1990.

  • Can't You Hear the Whistle Blow?

    For the past 20 years some railroad companies knew excessive noise on trains and in rail yards was damaging to the hearing of their employees. Doctors warned them and ear protection was available, but some railroad companies and the government failed to protect the health and safety of thousands of people.
