Age of Treason
Sharrock "presents an extensively reported portrait of the Oath Keepers, a self-styled patriot group that has established itself as a hub in the sprawling anti-Obama movement...the group recruits soldiers and law enforcement officers, asking them to reaffirm their oath to hold up the Constitution, but with a twist: they also vow to disobey any "illegal" or "unconstitutional" orders. While the Oath Keepers' official message is nonviolent, Sharrock uncovers how the group attracts conspiracy-minded members who are stockpiling weapons and advocating armed resistance against a government crackdown that they fear is imminent."

Ordained by hate
The Joplin Globe reports on how "a sect of supremacists is sowing the seeds of racism in the farmlands of Southwest Missouri." The story depicts the radical beliefs preached by an extremist white-only group called Church of Israel. Women who fall into the organization's subculture are victimized as "breeders," and their children grow up without normal socialization, some becoming criminals in their adult lives, the reporter reveals. Another part of the investigative package discovers that the church owns nearly 1,400 acres in northeastern Vernon County in Missouri. Although the church has dropped its status as nonprofit, it still does not pay taxes on its property. A deed filed decades ago purports to give ownership over 411 acres to the Church of Christ, but the document turns out to be bogus.

Patriots for Profit
WKRC-TV finds that "members of the patriot movement appear to be funding their cause by setting themselves up as a 'bank.' The fraudulent 'bank' is willing to help homeowners faced with foreclosure by legitimate banks. The militia members scan local newspapers for word of foreclosure on properties. They then contact the embattled homeowner, offering to buy their mortgage from the bank and prevent the foreclosure. In exchange the homeowner agrees to a 'lend lease' agreement with the militia bank, which is usually an operation called Soverign Accounting Agency."

Duke grabbed the national spotlight shortly after the 1995 bombing of the Murrah federal building in Oklahoma City. In 1997, Duke accused then House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Education Secretary Bill Bennett of masterminding a series of bizarre break-ins at his Monument, Colorado townhome. A four part series by The Spokesman Review reveals the frustration, distrust and fear much of the Inland Northwest has toward the federal government. The Spokesman Review finds that an anti-government movement, taking the form of militias, activists and naturalists believes that the federal bureaucracies have levied unfair restrictions that threaten their lifestyle. The investigation reports that these militias are no longer made up of a few extremists, rather they are well organized and highly trained groups that have the ability, and are willing to engage in violent conflicts with federal law enforcement.
