Ready Money: The Baltimore City Foundation
The investigation of a private nonprofit group, which was formed to benefit city programs for the underprivileged, revealed a number of shocking facts. Some of them being, that a number of city officials used the group to pay for a few items for the mayor’s inauguration and to avoid competitive bidding for the design of the visitors center. Also, some of the donations went to support political initiatives, not those needing help. The foundation was unaware of the happenings because they were asking few questions from the city government.

From the questionnaire, "Our stories look at two nonprofit Detroit hospitals that closed because of bankruptcy. We revealed that, in both cases, for-profit companies controlled by one doctor - who also established both of the nonprofit entities - reaped millions of dollars in profits from those hospitals before they closed. We also discovered that, while companies controlled by this doctor were receiving millions of dollars, patient care suffered drastically and short-handed staff struggled to provide service."

Two years too late?

Gerth offers this in-depth look at Terry McAuliffe, a fund-raiser for President Bill Clinton. Apparently, McAuliffe used political and business connections to raise money not only for political campaigns he worked on, but also to add to his own wealth. Since he is not government employed, he is not held to any ethical standards which might apply to politicians, but his work certainly played a large role in various political races over the past 20 years.
