  • Victims of Silence

The story reviews dating violence in Florida, as well as the beating of Rihanna by boyfriend Chris Brown. This revealed a number of issues, including “lack of prevention programs, the impact this news had, and that dating violence is under the domestic violence law only to ask for injunction and protection orders”. Further, dating violence isn’t considered a crime and many times is underreported after a physical attack.

  • Believing the Children

This story takes a look at an investigation, which took place in 1991. In 1991, satanic daycare abuse was becoming a national panic and many parents were in frenzy over this. So when Fran and Danny Keller were charged with sexually assaulting a child, everyone just believed it did happen. But many years later, the Kellers maintain their innocence while serving their time in prison. This story reinvestigates the case by retracing the original prosecution and the original police investigation report. As well as utilizing some fresh interviews from the central participants of the case, these include the Kellers themselves.

  • Mount Bachelor Academy: Ever unconventional, long controversial

When attending a private school for troubled teens, no one thought they would ever have to do such a thing as performing a lap dance while wearing revealing clothes. This method was "therapy" for victims of sexual abuse. Other types of methods were used, such as "sleep deprivation, extended physical labor, verbal abuse and restricting communication between parents and children." The reason these methods could continue was the school was "catering to the wealthy parents who felt they had nothing to lose and students were afraid to reveal the truth."

  • My Brother's Keeper

"Residents of a state-run institution for the developmentally disable and mentally retarded have been physically, emotionally and sexually abused for years. At times medical treatment has been inadequate, and life-threatening. Politics and fear kept employees and families from speaking out. State and federal investigations have been cursory and have not addressed long-term systemic problems." This collection of stories document this abuse and reveal how it was covered.

  • Florida foster care

ABC reports on "the failure of the Florida Department of Children and Families to protect six children who were under its care." The story reveals that Jacqueline Lynch, a certified foster parent, abused and neglected the six children, siblings of ages between 5 and 15. Nevertheless, the state allowed her and her husband to adopt the children. Lynch has been receiving thousands of dollars for supposedly taking care of the children until the state learned of the abuse from a child abuse hotline. "For almost two years, no caseworker ever came to inspect the Lynch home even though they were supposed to be monthly visits," according to the contest entry summary.
