The Sun-Sentinel investigated a fatal crash on the section of Interstate 95 that runs through Pompano. "In the early morning hours of Nov. 23, 1999... an FBI agent heading north in a Honda was hit head-on by a southbound Kia that was on the wrong side of the highway...The (Florida Highway Patrol) report said the FBI agent was not tested for alcohol but (it) had ordered a blood alcohol test run on the dead men... It appeared the FHP was taking the word of a law enforcement agent without further investigation." The newspaper found that the agent was driving on the wrong side of the road and that the driver and passenger in the Kia were not intoxicated. It was later learned that the FBI agent was intoxicated and caused the crash.
