"Under the Influence"
Dallas County has the "third-highest rate" of alcohol-related driving deaths. Reporters for the Dallas Morning News revealed that about "40 percent" of those who are sentenced for "intoxication manslaughter" are given probation instead of serving jail time to ensure treatment. The people of Dallas do not always agree.

San Jose police: Misdemeanor Justice
The San Jose police are the most aggressive city in California when it comes to misdemeanor crimes and the arrests. They have the largest per capita of arrests in the state and many of these arrests are for petty crimes or resisting arrest where no crime was actually involved. Many of these crimes involve the attitude of those being arrested, public intoxication without proper tests, and disturbing the peace. A number of these arrests are based on color and a great deal of force was used in these arrests.

Alarming Absence
The authors investigated reports that inspectors with the Columbus Fire prevention Bureau had missed or falsified dozens of fire inspections. The inspectors were supposed to make sure new or renovated buildings were safe for the public to occupy. There were missed inspections, allegations of intoxication on the job, and overtime fraud.

Falling Down on Drunk Driving
This 10 part series revealed that while most states showed a significant improvement in drunk driving fatalities between 1982 and 2002, Missouri placed 30th. In Missouri, drunk drivers-even those who injure and kill- are usually punished with just probation and fines. Also, many offenders enter a plea in return of a 'Suspended Imposition of Sentence', which never becomes part of the public record.

An alcohol treatment center in Denver holds publicly intoxicated citizens until they are sober. But problems in deciding who is publicly intoxicated and who is sober causes serious problems for this institution that is losing hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
