MCSO Sex Crimes Unit Investigation
We uncovered that Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Sex Crimes Unit detectives failed to investigate hundreds of sex crimes cases. Not only were hundreds not investigated, but many were cleared in a way so they would be reported along with arrest numbers giving the public the appearance the cases were solved.

Wrongfully Convicted
The stories of Levon Brooks and Kennedy Brewer, two Mississippi men who spent a combined 30 years in prison wrongfully charged with sexually assaulting and killing two 3-year old girls. The were exonerated through DNA evidence in 2008.

Pawlenty's Pardon
Jeremy Giefer was charged with raping his own daughter and then received a pardon for a 1993 sex-crime conviction for raping a 14-year-old -- the mother of his latest alleged victim. City Pages revealed that Giefer wanted the pardon so his wife could open a daycare center in his home. Republican Governor Tim Pawlenty chaired the board which granted the pardon.

Sexual Assault on Campus: A Frustrating Search for Justice
As part of a collaborative effort with the Investigative News Network, the Center for Public Integrity finds that students responsible for sexual assault on college campuses often receive no punishment, yet their victims' lives are turned upside down. Even when the perpetrator is a repeat offender, college judicial systems rarely expel the student.

Untested Justice
WREG uncovered that sexual assault victims in Memphis weren't being properly handled within the system. A failure to process rape kits made it more difficult to bring the victims' attackers to justice. Their investigation found as few at 6% of the rape kits were being processed. Since the story ran, sweeping changes were announced by the City of Memphis and over 2000 backlogged rape kits have been processed as a result.

Clery Crime Reporting Errors
"Stories documented the university's failure to disclose sex offenses, burglaries and other crimes on the Tarleton campus. None of 10 sex offenses reported by federal law, to DOE. Further, the university disclosed only about half of the burglaries that took place on campus".

Hospital Sexual Assaults
The reporter investigated sexual assaults on patients at hospitals in the Phoenix area, and the reporting led to criminal convictions for three hospital staff members. In March 2008, the station received an e-mail saying staff at a Scottsdale hospital didn't call police after a stroke patient told them she was sexually assaulted in her bed. After the original report aired, other people came forward with similar stories. After a public records request from the police department, the reporter found sex crimes against patients at about a dozen Phoenix-area hospitals. Most cases were never solved. Ptosecutors criminally charged employees at the original Scottsdale hospital with violations of Arizona's vulnerable adults law. Three were convicted and one received jail time. Several hospitals in the Phoenix are have reviewed and improved their patient security as a result of these reports.
