IRE members winners in Knight News Challenge

Three IRE members were awarded Knight Foundation grants that will create online resources for journalists.

The grants are part of six news innovations intended to improve access to information on local communities, air quality, elections, demographics and more that in total received $2.22 million as winners of Knight News Challenge: Data. The Knight Foundation said it sought ideas that make the large amounts of information produced each day available, understandable and actionable.

IRE, Google create new grant program for data journalism projects

A new fund that will provide crucial support for journalists working on data projects will be launched this fall.

Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) will award grants thanks to a $50,000 donation from Google Ideas. 

IRE Executive Director Mark Horvit said the fund will allow more news organizations to do in-depth reporting.

 “Digging into data allows journalists to provide more depth to their stories and better inform their audience. This fund will help kick-start data projects at news organizations that otherwise wouldn’t have the resources to do this important work,” Horvit said.

IRE receives $100,000 grant to continue watchdog training

Investigative Reporters & Editors  was awarded $100,000 Monday to continue its Watchdog Workshop series. The Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation in Oklahoma City chose IRE and 18 other journalism organizations to receive a total of $1.5 million in grants. The foundation awarded more than $1 million of that to investigative reporting projects, including many programs run by IRE members.

"The Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation is playing a pivotal role in fostering investigative journalism," IRE Executive Director Mark Horvit said. "Citizens in communities throughout the country are better informed thanks to the foundation's work."
