(March 20, 2025) — Seven newsrooms will receive custom, grant-funded watchdog training in the coming year through IRE’s Total Newsroom Training program.
Total Newsroom Training provides two days of intensive, personalized training for small and medium-sized newsrooms dedicated to watchdog journalism. This is the 12th year Investigative Reporters and Editors has offered the program, training more than 100 newsrooms across the U.S.
"Competition for Total Newsroom Training is fierce, and we had excellent applicants," said IRE Executive Director Diana R. Fuentes. "We had to make some tough decisions! Each of the newsrooms chosen will be getting the best in data analysis and investigative journalism training they want and need. IRE's goal is to help journalists produce stories that change lives in the communities they serve. That's what democracy is all about."
TNT newsroom training is based on the specific needs of each individual newsroom and includes sessions ranging from how to successfully handle public records battles to hands-on learning of spreadsheets and programming to topic-focused training such as best practices in covering education, law enforcement and underrepresented communities.
This year’s newsrooms were once again chosen from a record number of applicants. The selected newsrooms have a wide range of specialities and talents, covering topics from climate change and immigration to issues impacting Black and LGBTQ+ communities.
Congratulations to the winning newsrooms:
