US West, the "baby Bell," has a telephone monopoly in much of the West and is making things difficult for its competitors. Other companies, such as MCI, say the US West system is fraught with bugs and problems, and that US West is not responsive to complaints. To defer competition, US West is sponsoring a bill in the Colorado state Senate that calls for massive deregulation that would strengthen the company's government-sponsored monopoly. US West has made substantial donations to several state and national legislators as well as to Colorado's governor.
