The SF examiner investigates how money is affecting politics in CA in a three-part series focusing on top contributors, maintaining the status quo, and specialized term limits. The richest ($14.4 million) PAC in the state, Allied Business PAC, was founded by 5 conservative, fundamentalists, including state sen. Rob Hurtt. In maintaining the status quo, special interest groups effectively kill legislation (such as merit pay for teachers, gas pricing controls for SD and SF) before it happens. Change is more common by way of voter initiatives. Lastly, the Term Limits law has special interest groups now mobilizing grass roots, political power and money for candidates who fit their political agenda.
