Description

An investigation by Washington Monthly reveals that members of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission say that Americans in medical experiments are not as safe as they could -- or should -- be. In 1997, the NBAC said that all citizens would be safe if every subject in a medical experiment had two protections: "informed consent and independent review of research." However, NBAC advisors admit that federal protections do not cover all the research done in this country. One of the problems is jurisdiction. The way the law stands now, the federal government can only regulate those experiments it funds.
