A Washington Post investigation found old police guns were being used to commit crimes. Within the last decade, more than 20,000 guns in the Washington area had been recycled. The reporters used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain serial numbers of D.C. police guns, and information from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to link the recycled guns to the crimes. They also used a database from the Virginia State Police. Overall, the guns were linked to 107 crimes in the D.C. area.
