In a three-part series, WCMH-TV reveals that the Columbus Police Department had been hiring admitted criminals, allowing them to carry a gun and a badge; thieves, burglars, drug dealers and others were considered for hiring. The series found that 10% of the officers hired over the past 4 years had troubled pasts. as a result of the series, the Safety Director resigned and the city council held two public hearings to find out how this was happening and the council and the Mayor appointed an Independent Commission to review the police hiring process and to recommend changes, Nov. 28 - 30, 1994.
