"Risk At the Rink" was an investigative series detailing dangeroulsy polluted air in local indoor ice rinks. It was found that gasses dangerous to human health spew formt he ice re-surfacing machines, commonly known by their trade name, Zamboni. Each time these machines are used to make a slippery new coating of fresh ice at most rinks, usually once an housr and as many as 14 - 16 times each day, exhaust from the re-surfacing machines contaminates the arie in thes relatively small, confined buildings. Rink operators permit little exchange of rink air with fresh air from outside, in order to control the indoor climate ad reduce operating costs. So the fumes build up to levels that according to studies, produce widespread and serious, even life-threatening, health effects among rink users.
