Description

The Spokesman-Revies reports that "The Air Force mishandled the case of a 19-year-old former airman named Dean Mellberg, possible contributing to his descent into mental illness. Bureaucracy and constantly changing diagnoses kept Melba in the military, even though he was unfit to serve. Although he'd been considered dangerous, the Air Force discharged him without treatment, dropping him off at a motel in New Mexico. Weeks later, he shot 27 people, killing four, including the psychologist and psychiatrist who treated him.
