Through computer-assisted reporting, the Cleveland Plain Dealer found that Ohio doctors performed 8,881 Caesarean sections on women who had no reported health problems or complications during labor. The investigation found that one in every 20 women underwent a caesarean section that was unnecessary; also found that women who used nurse-midwives at hospitals were less likely to have C-sections as opposed to those whose babies were delivered by doctors. The unnecessary surgeries contributed at least $26 million to patient bills.
