Mother Jones examines the performance of Edison Schools Inc., "the nation's largest company in the business of managing public schools." The story focuses on how "from New York to San Francisco, Edison Schools Inc. has been selling the idea that for-profit management companies can do a better job of teaching kids than public schools districts." It details the attempts of Edison to take over a number of low-performing schools by promising high-tech classrooms and free of charge home computers for the students. The report finds that - according to a growing number of educators - "the reality doesn't match the hype" and "the company's approach has produced mixed results." The investigation lists a number of complaints about Edison, including poor academic performance at the company's schools and "higher-than-expected costs."
