Description

The series examined five years of county criminal court data involving crimes against persons as well as burglary. The Birmingham News found that the bulk of those cases were resolved with plea bargains, and even people initially charged with murder could plead guilty and not draw prison time. In addition, defendants with hired attorneys drew shorter sentences for most crimes than those with attorneys appointed by the court. (Nov. 26 - 28, 1995)
