The Press-Enterprise runs a series about the Phantom Family Syndrome, the failure of families and of society as a whole to nurture and protect every child. Without purpose, values or boundaries, or the security of a stable home, youngsters feel lost and hopeless. This is a national crisis in children's mental health. One article tells how parents can help their children bloom. Also, drugs are all therapists have to offer aometimes to troubled children because insurers won't pay for more expensive talk therapy.
