In two Census 2000 related stories, Sandoval and Wilkerson look at the growth of the Hispanic population in Allentown, Pa. Local Latino leaders believe the growth in population numbers was predictable, and the reason behind the increase in Census numbers was increased efforts to reach Latino communities. In the 1990 Census, officials believe over 5 percent of country's Latino population was overlooked. In a follow-up story the surge in the Latino population is attributed to the open job market and inexpensive housing. The article also looks at how the influx of Latinos is being felt in traditionally Caucasian and African-American neighborhoods.
