Schools up and down California are racing to put PCs in the classroom, hook up to the Net and otherwise get themselves wired. But while national research shows a payoff in better academic achievement, The Mercury News shows that California schools that invest heavily in computers, CD-ROMS, VCRs, laser disc players and the like generally have no better test scores than schools that don't.
