Description

This Wall Street Journal article analyzes the high costs involved in curbside recycling and shows that much of the burgeoning consumer recycling movement is based on a series of myths, including the widely held misperception that available dump and landfill space is fast disappearing. The article argues that keeping recyclable items out of dumps doesn't appreciably affect groundwater pollution, because recyclable items are the most benign materials we dispose of. (Jan. 19, 1995)
