PHPs, or Physician’s Health Programs, are meant to help doctors with addiction or other psychological problems. KSDK's investigation found doctors are sometimes falsely accused and forced into getting “help” that they don’t need. If they refuse—they risk losing their medical license. Doctors tell KSDK the result drains their savings, and usually forces them to take long leaves of absence to attend PHP-“preferred” treatment centers across the country. We found the PHP maze has even led some young doctors to take their own lives.
