The Forced Out project used an innovative mobile phone survey to contact people across South Sudan about land rights and forced displacement. We cross-referenced that data with satellite imagery, public reports, and interviews with sources in order to compile a comprehensive database of credible sites of forced displacement, property destruction, and occupation. The data collected found that more than 40 percent said they had been forced off their land or out of their home since December 2013. Nearly half of those people blamed government soldiers. It also was able to confirm the presence of forced displacement and occupation in every state in the country, a crucial piece of evidence in showing the widespread nature of the conflict. As well, it highlighted the significance of the long-term consequences of land rights issues in the context of ongoing peace negotiations.
